On line help for Search Engine
,

The search engine enables you to search the database containing all Grants and Scholarships awarded by NSERC since 1991. Once you choose one or more parameters, then conduct your search, a list of awards (or a report) will be displayed. You can then obtain more details on a specific project by clicking on it. You can also obtain other Display Results by selecting one of the topics listed in the pop-up list located in the bottom left corner of the index.

Tips for using the search engine:

The primary element, in the top left-hand corner, allows you to limit your search to either NSERC's Grants or Scholarships, or search the full database, which is the default setting.

The main area of the search engine allows you to choose various search parameters related to NSERC's grants and scholarships. Click here for more information on these fields. There are no default settings.

Note that to obtain valid results when using various parameters, the elements selected must be compatible. For instance, if you select Animal biology for Committee and Astronomy and Astrophysics for Research Subject, no results will be returned.

Use the Begin Search button to execute your request. A list of awards consisting of award title, name of person, financing year and financing type (Grants or Scholarships) will be displayed. Click on the title to view additional details about an award. A maximum of 100 titles can be posted at a time.

If you want the results displayed in a different format, use the pop-up list in the bottom left of the search engine. You can have the results displayed in one of the following formats:

  • Statistics by University
  • Statistics by Province
  • Statistics by Program
  • Statistics by Committee
  • Statistics by Area of Application
  • Statistics by Research Subject
  • Statistics by Award Amount

Use the Erase button to reset all parameters to their default settings.

You can conduct a search using the following fields:

Fields
Description

Financing Type:

You can search NSERC's Grants, Scholarships, or the full database Grants and Scholarships.

Click on the arrow, then on your selection in the pop-up list.

Program:

You can limit your search to a specific NSERC grant or scholarship program. You will find a full list of NSERC's programs grouped by major program areas. Please note that some programs do not exist today, but have been kept in the list for reference for previous years. For more information on programs, click here.

Please note that some programs do not exist today but have been kept in the list for reference for previous years. These programs are identified by an (H) at the end of their names.

For a more specific search on PGS-A or PGS-B scholarship awards, you can use the field Keywords in Award Title as a filter, and indicate PGSA or PGSB in this field.

Click on your selection in the pop-up list.

Selection Committee:

NSERC's grants and scholarships are awarded through a peer-review system where applications are evaluated by a selection or advisory committee.  For more information on committees, click here.

Please note that some committees do not exist today but have been kept in the list for reference for previous years. These committees are identified by an (H) at the end of their names.

Click on your selection in the pop-up list.

Area of Application:

NSERC requests applicants to specify their area of application for their program of research or study.

A complete list of codes and description of Areas of Application.

Click on your selection in the pop-up list, or indicate the code in the appropriate box.

Research Subject:

NSERC requests applicants to specify the research subject for their program of research or study.

A complete list of codes and description of Research Subjects.

Click on your selection in the pop-up list, or indicate the code in the appropriate box.

Award Title / Department:

Words in the Award Title and Department can be searched. The search engine uses one of three logical operators:

  1. and
  2. or
  3. not (to use with AND or OR before NOT)

Complex searches can be created with parentheses. You can use different operators for a complex search. Please note that it is important to correctly build the logic of your search. There is a difference between the following two searches:

  • (chain or liaison) and (polymer or hydrogene)
  • chain or liaison and polymer or hydrogene

It is also important to remember that the award titles and departments are submitted by the person applying for a grant or scholarship. Titles and departments are not translated: they are in English or in French. For best results, you should search with French and English keywords.

For a more specific search on PGS-A or PGS-B scholarship awards, you can use the field Keywords in Award Title as a filter, and indicate PGSA or PGSB in this field.

Name of Person:

You can search for grants and/or scholarships that a person received. The information indicated in this field is the Family Name and Given Name of the person. The name should be written as follows:

  • Family Name, Given Name

Example: Polanyi, John

Spaces, apostrophes or hyphens in names are not indicated in the database.

Example:

  • O'Brien -> OBrien
  • De Mori -> DeMori

You do not have to indicate the given name in the search. You can enter a partial family name.

Example:

  • Polanyi
  • Polan

All persons matching the Family Name and Given Name entered will be listed. The results could give, for example, a list of grants and scholarships awarded to Polanyi, A and Polanyi, J (for Albert and John).

Institution or Province:

You can search for information on a specific institution or province. Institutions indicated in the pop-up list are the ones officially eligible for NSERC support. The institution found in the database is the institution with which the person is associated. The list of institutions is ordered by province.

All Grants and/or Scholarships corresponding to your selection (institutions eligible for NSERC support) will be retrieved.

Select the desired institution or province in the popup list.

Fiscal Year:

You can select a Fiscal Year for your search. NSERC's database contains Grants and Scholarships data since 1991. You can also select a period of time by choosing a year in the from pop-up list and a year in the to pop-up list.

Your results will be a total for the selected period and not detailed results by Fiscal Year.

Fiscal Year is selected by default, instead of Competition Year. You can select the desired Fiscal-Year in the pop-up list. The most recent available year is selected by default.

Competition Year:

You can select a Competition Year for your search. Information based on Competition Year will be grants and/or scholarships awarded during the year in question. For example, a grant may be awarded for four (4) fiscal years (and will appear in each Fiscal Year), but will appear only once in the Competition Year.

You can also select a period of time by choosing a year in the from pop-up list and a year in the to pop-up list.

Your results will be a total for the selected period and not detailed results by Competition Year.

You must select the radio button for Competition Year and the desired competition year in the pop-up list to activate this search criteria, because the Fiscal Year is selected by default. The most recent available year is selected by default.

Award Amount:

You can select a minimum and/or maximum award amount when searching. Just indicate the amount in the appropriate field:

  • Minimum Amount (min.)
  • Maximum Amount (max.)

Amounts are in Canadian dollars and no spaces, no commas, and no decimals are required. You can indicate a minimum amount only: all grants and/or scholarships meeting this criteria will be listed on the report (all amounts of awards will be equal or higher than the criteria). The same is applicable for the maximum amount: All amounts of awards will be equal to or lower than the criteria. In addition, you can use both criteria to create a range (a minimum and a maximum amount).

Display Results:

You can choose the type of display results desired for your search. You can have the results displayed in one of the following formats:

  • Detailed List of
  • Awards
  • Statistics by University
  • Statistics by Province
  • Statistics by Program
  • Statistics by Committee
  • Statistics by Area of Application
  • Statistics by Research Subject
  • Statistics by Award Amount

Select the desired format in the pop-up list. The Detailed List of Awards is selected by default.
